This family of terrestrial birds has origins dating back more than 70 million years. Although they prefer walking, the family includes some of the heaviest flying birds.
Small to medium-sized birds, this family mainly inhabits wetlands. Nineteen species have become extinct since about 1600.
Cranes are similar to herons and storks but have a more streamlined body. They are widely found in shallow wetlands and open grasslands around the world.
This tiny family contains only one species. The bird's common name, Limpkin, derives from its 'limping' gait.
