The small, active Bananaquit belongs to a Neotropical family that contains only one species, divided into 41 subspecies. The song describes it as the "yellow bird" up high in banana tree.
Many species of Tanagers are brightly colored. The family reaches its greatest diversity in Central and northern South America.
These colorful New World songbirds are noted for their conical bill and, in many species, the males' bright plumage.
