Apollon (or Apollonas on some maps) is a fishermen's village on the northeast coast of the island.  The scenery along the road from Naxos Town is magnificent.

Marble from Naxos has been mined and exported throughout Greece since Neolithic times.

Near the village is an unfinished statue, a kouros, carved in the 6th century BC.  Its subject is probably Dionysos.  Because of a fault in the stone it was never finished or moved from the quarry.

Kouros --
A kouros is a statue of a naked young man.  This one would have stood 33 feet tall if it had been finished.  It is the largest kouros found on the island.
