Dominating a hilltop near Cuzco is the massive fortress of Sacsayhuaman.  Built of stones of astonishing size--the largest is 361 tons--the complex seems to have served both religious and military ends.  Today only ruins remain of the original fortress city which the Spanish tore down after crushing Manco Inca's rebellion in 1536 and then ransacked for years as a source of construction materials for building in Cuzco.
