Quito, Ecuador

Built on the ashes of the northern Inca capital following the Spanish conquest in 1533, Quito is now the capital city of Ecuador.  The Old City district is a maze of colonial mansions, stately cathedrals and crowded cobblestone streets.  It is an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

We were lucky enough to be in Quito on Good Friday and witnessed the amazing Good Friday procession through the Old City.

In 1736 a French Geodesic Mission determined a spot about 16 miles north of Quito to be the latitudinal center of the earth.  Visitors today seem to enjoy leaping back and forth between the hemispheres and have their photograph taken as they straddle the equator.
