Thien Mu Pagoda, Hue

Built in 1601, this is the oldest pagoda in Hue.  The 69 foot tower by the Perfume River is the official symbol of the city.  A pavilion close by shelters a huge bronze bell that can be heard six miles away.  In the monks' quarters is an open garage that contains the car that drove the monk to Saigon where he immolated himself in protest against the Diem regime.  This was just one of the photographs taken during this time in Vietnam that shocked the world.
