Sapa, Vietnam

With cascading rice terraces and lush vegetation, Sapa is perched on the eastern slopes of the Tonkinese Alps.  Jesuit priests arrived here in 1918 and sent word of the beautiful views and pleasant climate back to Hanoi.  By 1922, the French transformed the town into a summer retreat.

Now Sapa serves as the central market for hill people in nearby villages to trade food and crafts.
