Each Spring migrating song birds fly north over 600 miles across the Gulf of Mexico from the Yucatan Peninsular to land on the shores of lower Alabama.  Dauphin Island is one of the most popular places on the Gulf Coast to watch for these birds.  Follow this link to find out more about bird watching on Dauphin Island.

  The Orange Beach Senior Center sponsored the trip on April 7, 2004.  Dr. John Porter, Dauphin Island Sanctuaries, proved to be a very informative guide.  
       
Wa The group watched the swallows at the Audubon Sanctuary.  Who knew alligators and turtles beg for bread?  
   

   
  Great Blue Herons nest high above the forest floor.   Goats used to climb these trees to escape the alligators.   Buntings check for food at the Shell Mounds.  
       
  We got a closer look at marine life from Mobile Bay and the Gulf of Mexico at the Estuarium.   Prothonotary Warblers  
       
  The ferry ride home provided views of Brown Pelicans, Laughing Gulls and Cormorants.
