The first turtles appeared on earth more than 200 million years ago. My first close turtle encounter took place in 1975 when I was stationed on Midway Island at the northern end of the Hawaiian chain. Sea turtles would swim along with us as we played and snorkeled in the clear waters of the lagoon.
Today I delight in finding Kemps Ridley, and Loggerhead nests on the beach in front of my home in Lower Alabama. To learn more about sea turtles found on Alabama Gulf Coast beaches go to Share the Beach.
Here are a few Loggerhead Sea Turtles who have hatched on my beautiful beach at Orange Beach.
