Costa Rica Birds
Our guide, Hurben Gomez, can whistle the birds from the sky. He called five Resplendent
Quetzals to dazzle us in Monteverde. I loved the stories he told about the little birds such as
the Bright-rumped Attila, a flycatcher that eats frogs instead of flies. Or the White-collared Manakin, a fat little bird with red legs who carefully picks up all the litter from the
forest floor to clear a space to dance for his mate. He introduced us to a Bare-throated Tiger Heron in Tortuguero who joins his fisherman friend every day in his boat until they both
have caught their dinner.
Thank you Hurben and all my wonderful fellow travelers who helped me spot these beautiful Costa Rican birds!
