Beijing Hutongs

There are not many left.  Hutongs are the old Beijing neighborhoods of small gray homes on narrow winding lanes.  They are quickly being replaced by high rise buildings and yet more ring-roads.

We had lunch with Mr. and Mrs. Zhang Shui Xing in their home.  I helped make the dumplings.  The home is over 150 years old; a perfect studio for a brush painter.  I left with a beautiful river landscape.

By law the hutong houses must be gray.  You have to search for the hidden colors.  Four posts over the red door indicate a high administrator once lived here.
