Machu Picchu, Peru

The Temple of the Sun is integrated into the natural rock formation.  Beneath the temple is a cave which Hiram Bingham called the Royal Tomb.  Carved into the rock base is just a hint of five steps--intriguing and inexplicable.

Water played a very significant role in Inca religion as well as being necessary for the life of the city.  There were 16 fountains in the heart of the complex.  The Inca built canals and stone pipes to carry the pure spring water from Machu Picchu Mountain.

The Sacred Plaza is the most significant of the ceremonial areas.  On the eastern side is the Temple of Three Windows.
