Temples, Siem Reap

In 1860 a French naturalist named Mouhot hacked his way through the jungle in search of beetles and butterflies.  He died in Laos the next year but his writings about the extraordinary ruins he discovered caused worldwide interest in the lost city.

Angkor, capital of the Khmer empire, was built between the 9th and 14 centuries.  The huge population depended on the flooding of Lake Tonle Sap and a sophisticated system of reservoirs and canals.  When this system fell into disrepair the vast city was deserted.
